Small Town Sunday

It's Small Town Sunday over at Wendy's! And I double checked to make sure we are in fact small enough. Yep. We don't even have 1,500 people in Hickory. And the other part of our Small Town Sunday was spent in Rea where you can count the inhabitants on fingers and toes.
The first part of our Sunday was a big hike for me and the kids. At first I wasn't too keen on Lily coming along, not because I didn't want her to come but because of the last hike she went on. But I took a leap of faith on her and she made me proud. She even had fun. She called it 'an awesome day.'
Approximately 4 1/2 miles through the woods and down a country road or two to Mas & Pops' house. No way to capture how beautiful it was here. Two young turkeys running away from us.It is a local sport to shoot signs. At least it would appear so by this sign's shotgun injuries.Basketball hoop on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.
On the bridge crossing over Cross Creek just before you get to Masi's house. Now this is super cool (to me.) Behind Masi & Pops' house there is a door.Pretty neat so far right? And this door leads to 'The Cave.' When it's all closed up it's pitch dark in there. Cool and just slightly moist and smells like earth. This is where the kids play and they recently spent the better part of a day cleaning it. Lily had to show it off to me. The pictures don't do it justice.
This is right in front of Masi's house. I totally lucked out about the train going by. See some of Mark's bee hives down there? He's got 3 different bee yards (apiaries!) going. And then Sam and I hiked all the way back home (for a total of approximately 9 miles-woohoo!) while the girls hung out at Masi's. When Pop's dropped the girls off at home a little later they headed straight for the go cart. They go like crazy in that thing. And these last two are for Wendy.

Sara... so awesome! I loved your small town sunday adventure! You gave us a great tour. That b-ball goal cracks me up. What's with that??

I'll be glad when my youngest can trot through hiking trails better. We do some short stints with him now and he does great, but we have to stick with the paths for now.

I can't wait to take him geocaching! If your family doesn't do that you should try it!

It's so beautiful where you live. Can I bring my girls to visit some day? Just so they know what animals look like.

It was a gorgeous day to be outside and go hiking. Wah. I was stuck inside with the bathroom remodeler AKA husband gone ballistic. Not fun.

Wendy, we were assembling our hiking wish list as we went along. A proper GPS was at the top of that list. I have been wanting to do the geocaching! Gotta do it!

HPH, I think our girls would all have a blast together. Can you imagine!

Annette, you still have my deepest remodelling sympathies. If it makes you feel any better, the most I got to do with the horses this weekend was fly spray. :(

Cool! Do you think the cave was an icehouse?

That was way better than my weekend.

I guess the cave is like a root cellar, but the *real* purpose of the cave, back before Mas & Pops moved there, was as a hiding spot for the secret whiskey still! Pops said the guy ran the hose with the 'finished product' in thru the bedroom window of the house. And there's a tiny 'chimney' hole in the ground above it, presumably for the smoke to escape? Now the hole is just for the lightbulb and extension cord to hang through.
Explain to me why I still feel like we could get in trouble for bootlegging just because that guy did it those many years ago? That's why I didn't add it to the post! Silly!

Hello Sara~ Your blog has a nice homey feel to it. I love your pictures. The one of you guys in the field is priceless. I'm left wondering if that b-ball goal isn't from a house that used to be there many years ago. And, the cave picture has me intrigued as we have something very similar here in Maysville, KY. Only the room is under a railroad track. The room is cool and earthy smelling too. I'll try to take some pics later and compare notes with you sometime. Hope all is well. Have a great night.

Glad I'm a girl, I can stay at Grammy's house. I'd have a heart attack walking that far.
Thanks for the scenic tour!

That looks SO fun, especially the go cart pics! Sigh...I always wanted a go cart, buy my parents didn't love me as much as you obviously love your kids! ;)

Beautiful area you're in, btw!

Amy, don't feel bad. My parents 'didn't love me enough' to get me a pony. lol. What deprived childhoods we lived! ;)
